Meet Moonshine, an 8-year-old coal black Draft Cross gelding standing 15.2 hands tall with the kind of thick, sturdy build that makes you feel like you could ride him all day and still be ready for more. He’s big enough to make you feel secure, but not so big that you need a ladder and a prayer to climb aboard.
Moonshine has spent his life doing the kind of jobs that create good horses. He’s been ranched on, trail ridden across countless miles of country, and more recently has been earning his keep as one of my go-to guide horses on the dude ranch. When you’re responsible for leading large groups of horses and riders through the trails, you quickly learn which horses you trust the most. Moonshine is always one of my first picks.
Why? Because he’s fun.
He has a soft, easy neck rein, a smooth-as-glass trot, and a collected lope that feels more like riding a Cadillac than a horse. He moves willingly off leg pressure, side passes, backs with ease, and carries himself with the kind of softness that makes every ride enjoyable.
Moonshine is the type that genuinely enjoys having a job. Whether he’s leading a trail string, checking cattle, doing everyday ranch work, or simply heading down the trail, he approaches every task with a willing attitude and a calm mind. He’ll happily ride at the front, middle, or back of the group and doesn’t get worked up about the hustle and bustle around him.
One thing you’ll appreciate about Moonshine is his manners. He’s respectful, never pushy, stands quietly tied, picks up all four feet for the farrier, and handles hauling, bathing, clipping, mounting, and dismounting like a seasoned professional.
His soft, responsive cues make him enjoyable for experienced riders, while his kind disposition makes him suitable for a confident beginner looking for a horse they can continue to grow with. He’s the kind that makes you look like a better rider than you actually are—and honestly, we could all use a little help with that from time to time.
Moonshine comes with a current veterinary health exam and fresh Coggins. He is healthy, sound, and ready to find his next adventure partner.
